About Us

Incorporated in February 2003, SLEW Wellness Center is a nonprofit agency for uninsured, underinsured and low-income women with all types of cancer. Its Executive Director, Olga Young, founded the agency after discovering disparities within the healthcare profession for women who could not afford quality aftercare services. In keeping with its mission, SLEW Wellness Center provides FREE emotional and physical support to meet the needs of disadvantaged women

Who We Are

 

Olga Young, Executive Director of SLEW, is increasingly asked to speak at major cancer-related events.  She was chosen as a speaker at the Susan G. Komen “Race For The Cure” campaign kick-off (2006) representing worthy agencies that receive funding from the Race. In February 2008, she spoke at the Texas Cancer Council’s annual conference.  She is on the planning committee for the Alamo Area Breast Cancer Council. In March 2008, Mrs. Young was inducted into the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame under the heading of “Innovation” for creating a unique program for cancer patients in San Antonio.  She is a magna cum laude graduate of Florida A&M University where she received a degree in Marketing with a double minor in Management and Accounting.
 
SLEW Wellness Center has been recognized throughout the community for its unique combination of services.  SLEW has been highlighted in the San Antonio Express-News(July 2004), on KENS-TV (January 2005), which gave the program “five stars.”  In July 2005, SLEW was chosen as a mentoring organization for the African-American Leadership Institute (a flagship program of the Alamo City Chamber of Commerce). SLEW received the Freedom’s Foundation at Valley Forge National George Washington Medal of Honor (November 2005). In 2006, 2007 and 2008, SLEW was recognized by Spurs Sports and Entertainment/Silver Stars for service to the breast cancer community.
